Powerful potential. The betel nut can grow up to 20 meters high in the wild. Although they won’t get that big indoors, given proper care and time, their beautifully feathered leaves can grow up to 3 meters long.
The bigger the pot! If you want a large leafy display, re-pot it into a bigger pot. If you prefer smaller and more compact, leave it as is.
Dust-free and delightful! Keep leaves dust-free with a damp cloth and water. The bigger the tree, the more dust builds up.
Light
Areca catechu thrives best in a place with lots of indirect light and can even tolerate a few hours of direct sunlight per day. Place the palm near a large east or west-facing window for the best results.
Watering
Water well, keeping the soil moist at root level at all times. In summer, The Betel Nut Palm can be thirsty, particularly if located in a warm spot. Requires less water in winter. Do not overwater.
Temperature
Prefers warmer household temperatures between 20-25°C. Will not tolerate temperatures below 12°C.
Humidity
Areca palms enjoy high humidity levels. Place on a shallow gravel tray filled with water and mist regularly. Ideal in kitchens and bathrooms.
Feed
Liquid fertiliser can be applied during the growing season, once a month or so should be sufficient.
Height & Growth Rate
Areca catechu is a slow-growing plant and as a result, requires little maintenance. They can reach an ultimate height of around 3m, although this is unlikely indoors.
Toxicity
Toxic to humans and pets if ingested. Keep away from children and pets.
Air Purifying
Palms clean and improve air quality by filtering formaldehyde, benzene and carbon monoxide toxins from the surrounding environment.
